Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a great Hindu warrior king of the 17th century in India. He is renowned for establishing the Maratha Empire and a successful resistance against the Mughals. Shivaji’s birth anniversary, celebrated annually on the 19th of February, is commemorated as Shivaji Jayanti.


Shivaji was born in the coastal town of Shivneri, in the present day district of Pune, Maharashtra, on 19th February 1630. He was the younger son of Jijabai, the queen of the Maratha region, and Shahji Bhosale, a powerful nobleman. Young Shivaji was recognised with sagacity, valour and leadership from an early age and was groomed by his mother and the brilliant military strategist, Dadoji Kondev.
