Krishnadevaraya was one of the most renowned and powerful rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire in South India. He ruled from 1509 to 1529 as the third dynasty ruler of the Vijayanagar Empire. He was an intelligent and brave King who brought glory and prosperity to the Kingdom during his reign. He was regarded as an enlightened ruler who patronised scholars, poets, artisans and architects. He is credited with the construction of several temples, forts and other monuments during his reign.
Krishnadevaraya was born in a noble family and ascended to the throne at the age of 16. He believed in creating a powerful army and achieving great military successes to strengthen the Vijayanagara Empire. At a young age, he successfully defeated the Sultan of Bijapur’s general and Emperor Ismail Adil Shah of Bijapur to expand the Vijayanagara Empire. He also defeated the Sultan of Golconda and extended his kingdom to the perimeter of Golconda.
Under Krishna Deva Raya's reign, the Vijayanagara Empire reached its peak. He was an able warrior and led a large number of successful military campaigns, extending the dominion of the Vijayanagara Empire up to the Krishna River and the fort of Penukonda. Through his military feats, he managed to break the long-standing monopoly of Muslim rulers over the northern parts of the Deccan Plateau. He also strengthened the already formidable navy of the Vijayanagara empire by sponsoring the construction of some powerful naval vessels.
The reign of Krishna Deva Raya was marked by a number of social, economic, and administrative reforms. He reformed land revenue assessment regulations, encouraged irrigation and clearing of forest land, enhanced trade and commerce, and promoted agricultural production. He also issued several new land grant charters, which improved the overall conditions of people living in the Vijayanagara territories. He was a great patron of art and architecture and could be credited for building many temples and monuments throughout his reign, including Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, Zenana Enclosure, and the Temple of Virupaksha He also founded the great city of Vijayanagara, which became an important political and cultural center. Krishnadevaraya was known to be an able warrior who led numerous Successful military campaigns, often as far away as Orissa and Ceylon, where his army defeated the kings of the powerful Deccan Sultanates - Bidar, Bijapur and Golconda. He also is said to have frequently had to quell uprisings in the south, particularly around the areas of Mysore and Kurnool. He is also known for his patronage of the scholarship of Tamil and Telugu, for which he had several renowned authors in his court. He employed and appreciated the court poets.
